So last winter I decided to sign up to run a marathon in September. My plan was to run it with a friend so it wouldn’t be so tough. Then, a month or two later, I got a Save the Date from a good friend from college who is getting married that weekend in Michigan. Womp womp. I initially thought that I’d skip the wedding, but now that it’s closer, I’d really like to be there to see this important event in my friend’s life.
Also, as I started to train for the September marathon back in June, I wasn’t in the right place for it mentally and the thought of going on a long run made me want to cry. Actually, it did make me cry. So I backed off of training for that because you shouldn’t do something that makes you cry when you just think about doing it.

Maybe backing off was just what I needed, because I am really loving running right now and am kinda bummed about not doing a fall marathon. I was thinking the other day about signing up for a couple of halves, maybe one in October and one in November, when I stumbled upon the Prairie State Marathon.
It has good reviews on Marathon Guide and I ran a race in 2013 put on by the same group and really enjoyed it. And it’s only $75 for a full marathon if I sign up by the end of August. Also a bonus: you can pick up your packet on race day for no additional fee.
So, here’s my plan: I’m going to follow the Beginner Marathon Plan in the Runner’s World Big Book of Marathon and Half-Marathon Training book for a few weeks and see how I feel. If I still think I’m up for training for the full, I’ll sign up. I’ll have to modify the plan a bit and may have to do a few mid-week long runs due weekend commitments in September, but I think it’s doable.
Bottom line: there is nothing like holding that marathon finisher medal in your hand.
