While running my long run this morning, I decided to write a post about the shorts that I absolutely love for long runs. I pay particular attention to what I wear on my long runs because I’m out there for so long and I need everything to be very functional and comfortable. So, here are my favorite shorts to wear on long runs.

I have a pair of these shorts in black and I really love them for longer runs. The 3.5 inch inseam isn’t too revealing, which I appreciate on my longer runs along well-traveled roads. I’ve never had a problem with chafing with these shorts and I’ve worn them many times for marathon training long runs, so I’ve spent some time in them. I really like the pockets on either side near the hip. They’re great for stashing gels, lip balm, and my pepper spray. They also have a large pocket for keys on the inside of the shorts. The material that mine are made of is a stiffer fabric, but the texture of the fabric hasn’t bothered me when I wear them.
My first pair of real running shorts with lots of technical features when I started training for my first 10K was the Versa short from Sugoi, and I still wear them all the time. They’re really comfortable and have a lot of the same features as the Brooks HVAC Synergy short, like the pockets at the hip and the internal key pocket. I like that the reflective strips on the front of the shorts are a little bigger on the Verve shorts, which adds a little extra visibility if you’re like me and you do your fair share of running at dawn (or dusk). The material that my Verve shorts are made of is a little softer than the HVAC Synergy shorts, but I find both pairs to be very comfortable. The Sugoi website lists the inseam for these shorts as 5″, and I find them to be flattering without being too revealing or too frumpy.
If you like to show a little more leg, The Brooks Women’s Infiniti II shorts are fantastic shorts with all of the pockets for holding gels, etc. that the other two shorts have. I like to wear mine on days when I like to feel fast, or sometimes for races. (For some reason shorter shorts make me feel like running faster.) The nice thing about these shorts is that the inseam is longer (3.5″) and they’re shorter on the outside of the leg, so you don’t have to worry about showing off to much of something that you may not want to show. They lack the reflective strips along the front leg near the edge that the HVAC Synergy shorts and the Verve shorts have, and I find the material the Infiniti shorts are made of to be a little softer than the HVAC Synergy shorts but comparable to the Verve shorts.
Do any of you have favorite, go-to shorts for long runs?
