Is it seriously July already? It’s hard for me to get my head around that one. Anyway, new month, new goals! A lot of these are ongoing goals for me, but I’m going to try to emphasize them this month.
Goal #1: Eat at least 5 servings of fruits and veggies a day.

My diet hasn’t been awesome lately, partially because I’m super tired when I get done with work so I just eat something with calories and head to bed. I think making sure that I’m eating well will really help me improve my fitness during my marathon training. And, every day there’s more and more evidence that eating fruits and veggies is critical to maintaining good health.
Goal #2: Practice yoga at least 3 times a week, at the studio if possible.
I had some scheduling snafus last week and only made it to yoga once and I could feel the difference. Yoga helps me get in the post-run stretching I need and it also helps me focus mentally. Also, I start yoga teacher training this month (the program is one weekend a month for 9 months), and a requirement for the training is that I practice twice a week at the studio, so that should help me stay on track with this goal.
Goal #3: Continue to follow my marathon training program as described in Advanced Marathoning.
Yesterday officially started Mesocycle 2 of my marathon training, where I’ll be focusing on improving my lactate threshold and working on endurance. I’ll be building up to a long run of 20 miles and a 16 mile run with 12 miles at marathon pace on July 21st. My goal marathon pace is actually just faster than my half marathon PR pace, so I’m hoping if we get good weather that I might be able to PR at the Rock ‘n’ Roll Chicago half. Either way, I’m in for some solid training over the next few weeks.
Goal #4: Keep up on my foam rolling.
I’ve definitely been feeling the marathon training in my legs lately, especially in my IT band and my soleus muscles. I really need to do a better job of getting the kinks and adhesions out.
